How to Remove a Garden Hose Stuck on a Spigot
Brass on brass, outside, all summer. They grew close.
Hose couplings corrode onto spigots, especially when brass meets a different metal. Penetrant on the threads and two tools so the spigot doesn’t twist usually does it.
Step by Step
- 1
Turn off the water and relieve pressure
Close the spigot and squeeze the nozzle to drain pressure.
- 2
Soak the threads
Spray penetrant where the coupling meets the spigot. Wait 15–30 minutes.
- 3
Brace the spigot
Hold the spigot body with one wrench so you do not twist the pipe in the wall.
- 4
Turn the coupling
Use a second pair of pliers or a strap wrench on the coupling. If it is a cheap coupling and still stuck, cut it off and fit a new one.
- 5
Prevent it
Use a new rubber washer and remove hoses for winter.
No heat. Rubber washers and vinyl hoses melt.
- Do not spray penetrant into the spigot outlet, which carries water you may drink.
