How to Remove a Stuck Lawn Mower Blade Bolt
Wet grass, every week, for years. It is very attached.
Blade bolts rust from wet grass clippings and are torqued tight. Block the blade so it cannot turn, soak the bolt, and use leverage.
Step by Step
- 1
Disconnect the spark plug wire
Always. Turning the blade can turn the engine.
- 2
Tip it the right way
Tip the mower with the air filter and carburetor facing up so oil and fuel do not flood them. Check your manual.
- 3
Block the blade
Wedge a block of wood between the blade and the deck so the blade cannot spin.
- 4
Soak and break it loose
Spray the bolt, wait 15–30 minutes, then use a 6-point socket and a breaker bar. Check the manual for thread direction.
- 5
Reinstall to spec
Torque the bolt to the manufacturer’s figure. Replace a damaged bolt with the correct part, not a hardware-store substitute.
Fuel is close by. Drain the tank or keep heat well away, and never spray penetrant near a flame.
- Spark plug wire off before you touch the blade.
- Wear gloves. Blades are sharp even when dull.
