How to Remove Rusted License Plate Screws
Four screws. Ten years. One of them is going to be a problem.
License plate screws usually thread into plastic inserts or plastic nuts. They rust, then they spin. Penetrant helps the rust; clamping the screw helps the spin.
Step by Step
- 1
Soak each screw
Spray around the screw heads and give it 10–15 minutes.
- 2
Use a bit that fits
A worn bit cams out and strips the head. Press hard and turn slowly.
- 3
If it spins
Pull the plate outward while you turn, or grab the head with locking pliers and turn. The tension often lets the threads bite.
- 4
Last resort: cut it
An oscillating tool or a hacksaw blade slipped behind the plate cuts the screw. Replace the plastic insert.
- 5
Replace with stainless
Stainless screws and new plastic inserts stop it happening again.
No heat. The plastic inserts and bumper cover will melt.
- Cover paint with tape before cutting near the bumper.
