How to Remove a Seized Bike Pedal
Half of them are reverse-threaded. That is not the pedal’s fault.
Most "seized" pedals are being turned the wrong way. The left (non-drive-side) pedal has a left-hand thread. Both pedals loosen when you turn the wrench toward the back of the bike.
Step by Step
- 1
Know the direction
Right pedal: counter-clockwise to loosen. Left pedal: clockwise to loosen. Both: turn the wrench toward the rear wheel.
- 2
Soak from both sides of the crank
Spray where the pedal spindle meets the crank, and on the threads poking out the back of the crank.
- 3
Use a long pedal wrench
Position the crank and wrench so you push down. Hold the opposite crank or brake the wheel.
- 4
Protect your hands
Put the chain on the big ring before working on the drive side, so your knuckles land on the chain, not the teeth, if it lets go.
- 5
Grease on reinstall
Grease the pedal threads so they come off next time.
No heat. Most cranks are aluminum and heat can damage them.
- Keep penetrant off the brake rotors and pads on disc-brake bikes.
